How to run a quarterly website health check

Four times a year, crawl for defects, fix what you will, confirm TLS and indexability, then leave continuous watches for links and critical pages.

A quarterly health check is a calendar reminder, not a product. Same afternoon every three months: inspect the live site, fix what matters, confirm nothing is blocking search or HTTPS, and verify your continuous monitors still cover the right URLs.

The quarterly afternoon

1. Full inspection

Run SiteCheck (opens in a new tab) on the production URL. Free one-off: up to 25 pages. If you already pay Starter ($9/month) or Pro ($19/month), use the latest scheduled report and skim what is new. Walk findings in the order from how to inspect a website for health problems.

2. Index and HTTPS sanity

From the same report (and a private-window visit):

  • No accidental noindex on public pages.
  • robots.txt and sitemap still sensible.
  • Certificate valid for the hostnames people type; no mixed content.

Certificate urgency between quarters: how to monitor TLS certificate expiry.

3. Link regressions

If Mortise is already baselined, open the dashboard and confirm recent crawls are clean. If you never baselined, do it after this cleanup — broken-link alerts without an SEO suite. Do not turn every quarterly SiteCheck into a daily email of the same old 404s.

4. Critical copy URLs

Confirm SignalWatch (opens in a new tab) still points at pricing, legal, or homepage blocks you care about. Add or remove monitors when the business changed. Free: 3 monitors.

5. Write three lines

In your notes: date, what you fixed, what you deferred. Next quarter's you will thank you.

What quarterly is not

  • A substitute for Mortise between quarters.
  • A full SEO strategy session (ranks, backlinks, content).
  • A reason to buy a desktop spider if SiteCheck already answers the punch list — SiteCheck vs desktop SEO crawlers.

Checklist

  • Calendar invite every 90 days.
  • SiteCheck (or paid scheduled report) reviewed.
  • Mortise and SignalWatch coverage still match the live site.
  • Notes saved with the date.
